Cocoa is produced by an evergreen tree that can reach a height of up to 10m. Its scientific name is Theobroma cacao, it belongs to the Sterculiaceae family which mainly grows in South America. Christopher Columbus was the first to import the cocoa plant from the Americas. He was impressed by how valuable it was for the indigenous people (the ancient Maya and Aztecs populations considered it as the food of the gods). Chocolate consumption is one of the best ways to benefit from the properties of cocoa. It has both antioxidant and antidepressant properties. Theobromine, together with caffeine, boost concentration and reaction times, whereas serotonin supports the nervous system in case of depression. Cocoa is also said to be effective in treating headaches.
It does good to the brain, improves the mood and according to a recent research conducted in the UK, consuming 200g of coca on a daily basis would even increase life expectancy.
